File Manager - File menu

Open

This option is used to select a keyed file for display. The standard File Open dialog is used.

The initial directory is the one specified as the default on the Configure screen.

The file may be selected either by the data dictionary (.d extension) or by the keyed file (.k extension). The program then searches for and displays details of all other file components with the selected file name:

Extension

Data dictionary

.d

Defines the file layout and secondary indexes

Index file

.k

The index to the data file

Data file

The data file, which is absent if the file was created with the Index file only option.

Secondary index directory

.x

Directory containing any secondary indexes defined for the file.

The last eight files that were selected are listed in the File menu for easy re-selection.

File Manager assumes that a data dictionary is located in the same directory as the index and data files.

Delete

Deletes all components of the selected file. Nothing can ever be recovered.

Move or rename

This option enables the selected file structure to be moved to a new directory, renamed, or both simultaneously.

The Select new name for file window opens.

To move the file structure without changing the name, change to the new directory and enter the existing file name.

To rename the file structure, enter the new name.

The new file is selected and displayed.

Copy

This option makes a copy of the selected file structure. The file may be copied to a new name in the existing directory, or copied to a new directory with its current name or a new name.

The Select name for copied file window opens.

Change directory if required, and enter the file name for the copied file.

The file name should be entered without a suffix. Any suffix that is provided will be treated as part of the file name.
